Palm gets back into the game with touchscreen Pre, WebOS as the new iPhone competitor

Palm was under serious pressure to hit a home run at CES today—and boy, did it deliver. Running Palm's gorgeous (if belated) new platform, dubbed WebOS, the touchscreen Pre could well be Palm's savior, and perhaps its biggest hit.

So, as for the Pre itself (due on Sprint in the first half of this year, no pricing yet): It's got a big, 3.1-inch 480 by 320 touch display (yes, with multitouch and an accelerometer), weighs in at 4.8 ounces, and comes with a curved, slide-out keypad. Yes, it does Wi-Fi and 3G (EV-DO Rev. A, to be exact), as well as GPS (with turn-by-turn directions courtesy of TeleNav), stereo Bluetooth, 8GB of internal storage, a 3MP camera, a 3.5mm headset jack, and a removable battery.

But the key to the Pre is its OS, and WebOS—previously code-named "Nova"—is one of the hottest mobile platforms I've seen yet, rivaling both Android and Apple's iPhone OS.

At a glance, WebOS doesn't look all that different from the icon-driven, touch-based Android and iPhone platforms; you've got your main, wallpapered home screen, complete with a row of icons along the bottom for your standard e-mail, calendar, and calling features.

I'm also happy with Palm's integrated messaging interface, which combines IM and text chats into a single, threaded conversation.

But Palm's done a few key things differently here, starting with the "gesture" area at the bottom or side of the screen (if you're, say, surfing the Web in landscape mode). For example, if you're browsing an individual contact in the Pre's address book, you can flick horizontally in the gesture area to go back to the contact list, or you can flick up for a translucent window shade of applications. Nice.

More importantly, though, is WebOS's way of letting you handle and sort all your open applications like a deck of cards. If you're composing an e-mail, for example, you can flick up, call open a new application, and then return to your e-mail at any point. All open applications appear as windows (similar to the windows in the iPhone's Web browser), and you can flick back and forth, reorder them, and discard them at will.

That's really cool, and it solves one of the biggest problems that's dogged the iPhone—namely, that its various applications are all walled off, making it difficult to easily switch from, say, the Web browser to the calendar and back again.

WebOS also introduces a concept dubbed "Synergy," which all applications can continuously get info from the Web. The best example: WebOS's unified contact list, which seamlessly displays all your contacts and grab their e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and IM handles from Facebook, Gmail, Exchange, you name it.

And then there's the WebOS "Dashboard": a flexible space at the bottom of the screen for calling, messaging, and appointment alerts. As you're working in other applications, you might see the first line of a text message or IM, or the Dashboard might open a bit bigger for a calendar alert, complete with "dismiss" and "snooze" options. When alerts appear, you're free to keep working in your open application, or you can go ahead and open the alert—and if you want to answer an IM, you can swipe to that "card" in WebOS, and then return to your previous application card. Great stuff.

A few other interesting notes: When you're sitting at the Pre's main screen, you can just start typing on the QWERTY keypad to call up a universal search menu; you'll instantly see any matching contacts, or you can quickly jump to Web results from Google, Google Maps, and Wikipedia.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention "Touchstone," a little hockey puck of an accessory with a killer feature—wireless charging. Just place the Pre on top of the Touchstone device to power it up. Awesome.

It's a lot to chew on—indeed, Palm's press conference is barely an hour old, and already I'm having the same feeling I did after the iPhone's debut two years ago. The Pre—and WebOS—look red-hot, and the two combined may well guarantee that Palm will live to fight another (and perhaps, many) days.

So, initial thoughts? Like what you see? Will developers take to writing WebOS applications? Fire away.

Note: Just to clear up any confusion—the Pre is not Palm's first touchscreen phone, not by a long shot. As any Treo fan knows, Palm has been making touchscreen smartphones for years, although earlier models worked better with a stylus than a fingertip.

If you can't catch the presentations in person, there's good news: they've decided to offer their presentations at the Code Camp for free, online, in the form of webcasts. Here's what to expect:

* Intro to webOS: 9:00 am - 10:15am
webOS is the newest mobile development platform. Specifically for the Palm pre and pixi, webOS is a mobile development framework based strictly on JavaScript, CSS and HTML. If you have used any of these in the past then you have a head start on developing in webOS. If you want to really jump into webOS or you want a glimpse of what developing in webOS is like, this session is for you. This intro to webOS will cover the basics of the framework, how to get started and the major points you need to know to get off on the right foot.

* Intro to webOS UI Widgets: 10:30am - 11:45am
This session will go over the basics of working with user interface components (widgets) in webOS. It will cover the basic widgets you will use in almost every application and will also cover some of the advanced widgets you will need.

* Intro to webOS Services: 12:45pm - 2:00pm
All applications need data and webOS applications are no exception to that rule. In this session you will learn several types of ways to retrieve and work with data within your webOS application. This will include working with local storage as well as retrieving data asynchronously from servers. And let's face it, it would suck to develop on phones that don't give you access to their cool services like GPS, the address book, calendar and other things. Thankfully you can access these things and more using Mojo's services via webOS calls. This session will cover the basics of making service calls.

In addition to what's listed in the above descriptions, I'm told that they'll be writing two applications to help demonstrate the concepts they'll be talking about: the first is an interactive game, the second is an app that will showcase the services available in webOS.

iTunes Updated to 9.0.2, Pre Sync is Dead.

Here we go again. Apple has updated iTunes to version 9.0.2 and Palm Pre sync is dead again using webOS 1.2.1, despite Palm's Hurculean efforts to spoof nearly every aspect of USB identification known to mankind. As with previous breakages, iTunes does launch when you connect a Pre with Media Mode, but it doesn't appear as a device on the sidebar.

Pre owners can at least take comfort in knowing that Apple's main goal here was adding support for the new AppleTV format, but breaking Pre sync support was a nice cherry for them.

iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.

Round and round we go. It's your move, Palm, what's it going to be?

Virtual Desktop And Web OS

Have you ever imagined of a Virtual Desktop which can be accessed through a normal web browser?

It’s reality as the open source community has come up with Virtual Desktop accessible from any geographical location. It has integrated Office applications like Word Processor, Spread sheets, Presentations, Mail client, User management, Desktop customization just like Windows & Linux.

EyeOS , Ulteo & Psych Desktop are few examples of Web OS and Virtual Desktop. I have tried EyeOS and it’s installation is really simple.

Ulteo has now released Open Office integrated in it’s Virtual Desktop version but it is still in Beta stage. Once I try it I will share my experiences.

Psych Desktop installations seems to be tough as I was unable to install it after several attempts. The error message s during instalation process is alos not user friendly.

Web OS 2009 Competition | Palm Pre Just the Beginning for WebOS

There has rarely been as much anticipation of a single smartphone as there has been about the Palm Pre since it made its grand entrance at January's CES in Las Vegas. Still, if things go as Palm plans, the real news is more about their new WebOS than it is about the Pre device specifically. Palm sees the Pre as just the beginning of a WebOS based ecosystem, which is essentially corporate speak for saying we plan to make a bunch of different phones based on WebOS.

If history is an indicator, that's a good tactic for Palm to pursue given that the company was king of the PDA hill when they made both the hardware and the software.

We're all for the optimistic outlook, but the essential task at hand is getting the Pre launched successfully. Palm and Sprint, the devices exclusive U.S. distributor, have been frustratingly slow to release details, particularly those regarding pricing and a debut date. As we wait for product information, Palm's dismal financial position is being given ever more attention. The company reported a net loss of $98 million for its fiscal third quarter on revenues of $90.6 million. That revenue figure is down from $312 million in the same quarter a year ago. Smartphone revenue was off by 72 percent.

Palm Chief Financial Officer Doug Jeffries noted that "With these financial figures it's easy to forget the progress we've made." Nonetheless his tone was upbeat about the successful launch of the Pre on the Sprint network. The company's CEO Edward Colligan sounded the same chord, saying that "I have never had more confidence in Palm's ability to bring a new product to market on time and at scale."

Key to successful introduction of the Pre and WebOS is Palm's relationship with Sprint. Both companies have a lot riding on the smartphone and CFO Jeffries said they had been working "more collaboratively" with the wireless provider. Palm is also working hard with software developers to have applications ready at launch having released its MOJO Software Development Kit to select developers.

In metacomputing, WebOS and Web operating system are terms that describe network services for internet scale distributed computing, as in the WebOS Project at UC Berkeley, and the WOS Project. In both cases the scale of the web operating system extends across the internet, like the web.

However, the terms WebOS and Web operating system have been employed more broadly and with far greater popularity in the context of "the web as in HTTP", and for many meanings ranging from singular systems to collections of systems. In April 2002, Tim O'Reilly spoke of "the emergent Internet operating system" as an open collection of Web services.

Common to uses for collections of systems, a Web operating system is distinct from Internet operating systems in that it is independent of the traditional individual computer operating system. This conception of the system reflects an evolution of research in the field of operating systems into the increasingly minimized (for example, TinyOS and Exokernel) and distributed (for example, Inferno), and for distributed systems increasingly defined in terms of the specification of their network protocols more than their implementations (for example, Plan9's 9P).

In a usage referring to singular network services, a Web operating system is another name for a Webtop. These services turn the desktop into a service that runs on the Internet rather than on the local computer. History Of WebOS

WebOS gained popularity in 1999 when a much touted start up, WebOS Inc. (at first known as Hyperoffice and later known as MyWebOS), was founded by Berkeley grad Shervin Pishevar and Emory grad Drew Morris. WebOS licensed the WebOS technologies from Duke University and University of Texas (Austin) and recruited Dr. Amin Vahdat, Professor of Computer Science at Duke, who had pioneered the WebOS technologies at University of California at Berkeley where he got his PhD on his WebOS research. WebOS acquired WebOS.org, which was created by a young Swedish programmer, Fredrik Malmer, who had created the first online desktop environment.

Soon after, some of the top DHTML and Javascript programmers in the world such as Erik Arvidsson of WebFx fame, Dan Steinman, creator of the Dynamic Duo Cross-browser DHTML API, joined WebOS. WebOS raised over $10 million in financing from Impact Venture Partners led by Adam Dell and Grotech Capital. WebOS was launched with a vision of creating the first web operating system complete with a WebOS API allowing developers to create Windows-like web applications that worked at extremely fast speeds by caching much of the code in the local browser. Arvidsson later launched Bindows, a framework very similar to the WebOS API, that does much of this and is used by many large companies and the US Military.

WebOS filed the very first WebOS patents in 1999. WebOS competed with another start up, Desktop.com, which was aimed more at the consumer market. WebOS was covered by many media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, financial Times, LA Times, Power lunch on CNBC, Fox News and CNN and helped spread the WebOS meme further. WebOS launched Hyperoffice, a full office suite, back in 1999.

A 2003 scientific publication was made about BolinOS, a "Web Operating System for Internet / Radiology"^[14] based on works started in 1995 by the University of Geneva in Switzerland, and relates the diverse aspects of this kind of online platform, based on client and server side distribution of applications using platform independent software.

Today, IBM announced a new and emerging technology that can help the blind and visually impaired people “see” Internet multimedia. This new technology that enables blind people to experience streaming video and animation on the Internet has been designed at IBM’s Tokyo Research Laboratory.

This new multimedia browsing accessibility tool developed by IBM has the potential to open a world of rich content to visually impaired people all over the globe.

Over the last two years, the amount of multimedia content has risen dramatically. In spite of this, people with low or no vision at all, have not been able to enjoy the benefits of these advances. Screen-reading software and self-talking browsers cannot really handle multimedia applications. Besides, visually impaired users cannot see multimedia control buttons appear on a screen.

Then again, the audio of a streaming video, which automatically starts playing after the page is loaded, interferes with a synthesized assistive voice from screen-reading software, a vital assistant for visually impaired users. Furthermore, most multimedia content operates with a mouse rather than keyboard, making it impossible for visually impaired people to use it.

The new multimedia browsing accessibility tool offers people with visual impairment the same multimedia control features sighted people see and operate with a mouse. To enjoy a streaming video on video sharing websites, for example, visually impaired people can select the “play” button by simply pressing a predefined shortcut key to control the media instead of roaming the content to search for buttons to control the video. The tool also allows users to control video replay speed, volume and even speed up the sound since to people with visual impairment, listening to the sound streaming video offers is painfully slow.

According to Frances West, director, IBM Human Ability and Accessibility Center, “The new multimedia browsing accessibility tool will enable persons with visual impairments the opportunity to access dynamic multimedia web content, quickly and easily. IBM has a long history of developing innovative solutions for persons with disabilities, and this tool is another example of IBM innovation that will enhance the web experience for persons with visual impairments.”

The new multimedia browsing accessibility tool can adjust the volume of an individual source, allowing users to identify and listen to different sound sources including screen-reading software and the sound of a video. If a content creator wants to offer a voice narrative to a video, the new accessibility tool provides the flexibility of utilizing the metadata, which contains a text script explaining what is happening on screen. The tool automatically makes adjustments to let voice guidance synchronize with the video, even with the speed control capability.

IBM has plans to open source the new multimedia browsing accessibility tool to accelerate the enhancement and adoption of the tool to make multimedia contents accessible for visually impaired.

Google targeted in e-mail scam

More than 30,000 account details have been posted online

Google's web-based e-mail system, Gmail, has been targeted as part of an "industry-wide phishing scheme".

The firm said that it had immediately safeguarded the affected accounts.

BBC News has seen two lists that detail more than 30,000 names and passwords from e-mail providers, including Yahoo and AOL, that were posted online.

The lists also include details of thousands of Microsoft Hotmail users. Google said fewer than 500 of its accounts had been affected by the scam.

However, the search giant revealed that it had discovered a third list, but would not say how many accounts it showed.

Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing data such as bank account details or login names.

"We recently became aware of an industry-wide phishing scheme through which hackers gained user credentials for web-based mail accounts including Gmail accounts," said a Google spokesperson.

"As soon as we learned of the attack, we forced password resets on the affected accounts. We will continue to force password resets on additional accounts when we become aware of them."

The firm stressed that the scam was "not a breach of Gmail security" but rather "a scam to get users to give away their personal information to hackers".

'Industry problem'

The phishing scam was originally thought to target just Hotmail users.

It was brought to light when 10,000 Hotmail addresses were posted online at Pastebin, a website commonly used by developers to share code.

The list was reported by technology blog Neowin.

However, a second list of 20,000 names has since emerged containing e-mail addresses and passwords from Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, Gmail and other service providers. A third list, which has not been seen by the BBC, was discovered by Google.

Some of the accounts on the list of 20,000 names appear to be old, unused or fake. However, BBC News confirmed that many - including Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail addresses - were genuine.

Other addresses on the list include Comcast and Earthlink accounts.

It is not clear whether the new lists was part of the same phishing attack that collected the Hotmail addresses or a separate scam.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said phishing was an "industry-wide problem".

"Our guidance to customers is to exercise extreme caution when opening unsolicited attachments and links from both known and unknown sources, and that they install and regularly update their anti-virus software."

Both lists can still be accessed online.

A spokesperson for Yahoo urged consumers to "take measures to secure their accounts whenever possible, including changing their passwords".

Carole Theriault of security firm Sophos agreed.

"Getting access to one password can give someone access to lots of things," she said.

People should change their password on any other site where they use it, she added.

A recent report by the firm said that around 40% of people had the same password for every website they used.

"People need to see a difference between an online bank account and booking cinema tickets online," she told BBC News.

But, she said, blame did not rest with the users of the e-mail services, who likely clicked on a link in a scam message.

"Phishing attacks are very subtle these days," she said. "People do all kinds of tricky things."

Fake websites, which ask for a users login details, can be made to look like those of reputable companies.

"This should be a wake-up call to Google and Microsoft to educate their users," said Ms Theriault.

Legal threat closes postcode feed

The Royal Mail owns and maintains the database of postcodes

Websites that help people find jobs or hospitals have been hit by legal action threatened by the Royal Mail.

The threat was issued against the company supplying them, and many other sites, with postcode data.

Royal Mail said the legal action was threatened to stop "unauthorised access" to the postcode data.

Ernestmarples.com, which supplied the address data, said it did not have the resources to fight a legal battle so has turned off its feed.

Sites affected by the withdrawal of data include Job Centre Pro Plus, HealthWare (locates nearby pharmacies and hospitals), Planning alerts.com (monitors planning applications), Straight Choice (finds out who sent political leaflets) and many more.

Commenting on its action the Royal Mail said: "We have not asked anyone to close down a website.

"We have simply asked a third party to stop allowing unauthorised access to Royal Mail data, in contravention of our intellectual property rights," it added in a statement.

The third party was Ernestmarples.com which supplied postcode data to the sites. Typically those wanting to use the regularly updated list of 1.7 million postcodes pay the Royal Mail for access.

Many of the sites hit by the action are volunteer efforts that would be unable to afford the licence fees - about £4000 per annum for unlimited access.

Harry Metcalfe, co-founder of Ernestmarples.com, declined to say how it got access to the postcode data.

"There are certain legal questions around the specifics of what we are doing," Mr Metcalfe told BBC News. "The advice we have received so far is that allowing the service to continue operating while we attempt to resolve this issue would be unwise."

In the interim, the company is searching for alternative free sources of postcode data even though those are known to be less accurate and not as regularly updated.

Mr Metcalfe said Ernestmarples.com would talk to the Royal Mail about getting access to the full postcode data.

Ernestmarples.com is named after the post master general who oversaw the introduction of postcodes in 1959.

Jim Killock, head of the Open Rights Group which campaigns on digital issues, said the action showed why the UK needed a more open approach to official data.

"It is easy to see that large numbers of small business ideas and not for profit services are being blocked by these licence fees," he said. "It is in effect a tax on innovation."

Microsoft is trying to sell the world on the notion of a "Windows phone."

The first part of that effort is simple. It's a rebranding exercise. Although Microsoft will continue to sell its Windows Mobile operating system, it is going to put its marketing muscle behind the term "Windows phone" to describe the devices that run its software.

The second part is trickier: convincing consumers that they want a Windows phone as opposed to all of the other smartphones on the market, such as the iPhone, BlackBerry, or Palm's Pre, to name just a few.

On Monday at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain, the company is showing off Windows Mobile 6.5, an update to its operating system aimed at making the software more "finger friendly" and just more appealing to consumers in general. The update, which won't show up on phones until the fourth quarter of this year, also features an update to the mobile Internet Explorer browser and a new "marketplace" for buying software that can run on the phone.

Microsoft will also formally announce its My Phone backup and restore service, some details of which leaked out earlier this month. The service is designed to not only make sure things like calendar and contact data are synced to the Web, but also other phone data such as photos and text messages.

These are the kinds of improvements that Windows Mobile boss Andy Lees said he was alluding to in an interview with CNET last month, where he laid out Microsoft's vision for the phone.

"We talked about importance of the device being easier to use and being a window in on your life," Lees said in an interview on Friday, shortly before he headed to Barcelona.

In the earlier interview, Lees acknowledged that Microsoft had fallen somewhat behind by trying to offer software that could run on "the least common denominator" of hardware, but said that the next 12 to 18 months would bring a series of announcements that would help Microsoft thrive in a world in which phones will soon have dual-core processors and graphics abilities to rival the original Xbox.

With the new software update, Microsoft is adding a rival to the iPhone's App Store as well as making its software easier to use without having to reach for a stylus or flip down a keyboard.

But it remains a question whether Microsoft's changes will be enough, particularly as rivals improve their products over the coming year.

On the browsing front, for example, Microsoft is focusing on the fact that, while other browsers may look nice, Mobile IE can do more than the others because it is compatible with the desktop Internet Explorer 6 and with Adobe's Flash. Microsoft commissioned a study that found its browser can execute "up to 48 percent more assigned tasks than the other browsers and phones studied."

However, it is unclear that such metrics--as opposed to just plain ease of use--are what consumers use to select a phone.

Lees notes that supporting multitouch, a la the iPhone, has its downsides as well. Such phones require capacitive screens which are less precise, making things like handwriting recognition less feasible. Microsoft sells many Windows phones, for example, in Asian countries where handwriting recognition can prove far quicker than a keyboard for entering text.

Reports suggest Windows Live Hotmail accounts have been hacked

Thousands of accounts on web-based e-mail system Hotmail have been compromised in a phishing attack, software giant Microsoft has confirmed.

BBC News has seen a list of more than 10,000 e-mail accounts, predominantly originating from Europe, and passwords which were posted online.
Microsoft said it had launched an investigation.
Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing details such as bank accounts or login names.
"We are aware that some Windows Live Hotmail customers' credentials were acquired illegally and exposed on a website," said a Microsoft spokesperson.
"Upon learning of the issue, we immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers."
Quick change
Graham Cluley, consultant at security firm Sophos, told BBC News the published list may just be a subset of a longer list of compromised accounts.
"We still don't know the scale of the problem," he told BBC News.
Technology blog neowin.net was the first to publish details of the attack. It said the accounts were posted on 1 October to pastebin.com, a website commonly used by developers to share code.
Although the details have since been removed, BBC News and Neowin has seen a list of 10,028 names beginning with the letters A and B.
BBC News has confirmed that the accounts are genuine and predominantly originate in Europe.
The list included details of Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail accounts with email addresses ending hotmail.com, msn.com and live.com.
Mr Cluley advised Hotmail users to change their password as soon as possible.
"I'd also recommend that people change the password on any other site where they use it," he said.
Around 40% of people use the same password for every website they use, he added.
Hotmail is currently the largest web-based e-mail service.

Microsoft says this Windows Mobile release is easier to use

Mobiles sporting the latest release of the Windows Mobile operating system are now available for sale worldwide.

Microsoft is also formally launching its application store, known as Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

While the service will launch with about 60 applications available in the UK, Microsoft's Alex Reeve said that number will soon rise sharply.

Windows-run phones can also make use of the My Phone service, a synchronisation service managed "in the cloud".

The new operating system and the application store were first announced in February, when a "beta" testing version of the My Phone service also launched.

Tuesday's announcement sees a full integration of handsets incorporating the new OS with access to the store and backup service.

Microsoft has partnered with major network operators T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone and Orange in the UK, as well as with Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U to distribute handsets made by a wide range of manufacturers.

The expansion - as well as the rebranding to "Windows phones" - are an effort to increase market share in the mobile handset world, where Windows currently holds about 9%.

"I think one of the fundamental advantages that we have...is the amount of choice there is in terms of hardware choice and platforms, and that just keeps going and going," said Alex Reeve, Microsoft's director of mobile business in the UK.

'Right there'

The OS update - the first since March 2008 - is viewed as minor, as Microsoft is developing a more complete overhaul of the OS. The result of that, Windows Mobile 7, should be released in early 2010.

Significant changes in the 6.5 release include a move away from the use of the stylus and toward more finger-friendly icons and buttons, and a push to see more "at a glance" from the lock screen and the main menus.

The operating system comes bundled with Internet Explorer Mobile 6.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Reeve admitted that "this is an area where Microsoft probably hasn't kept up with the market as well as we should have in the past, but with now with the new version, we're right there".

It includes a significantly updated user interface and Flash Lite for viewing video and animation content.

The My Phone service is also updated compared to the beta version. Users can both backup and manage their applications and multimedia content via the My Phone service, accessible also on a PC. The service offers 200MB of storage for free.

Photos can be published from the My Phone site or directly from a Windows Phone to popular sites such as Facebook and Flickr.

Security features offered for free include the ability to map the last place a phone was synchronised to the My Phone service.

A further, paid "premium package" allows a suite of security features including the ability to locate a handset's current location, present an "if found" message to its screen, or lock it or erase its contents altogether. The premium service is at the time of launch only available in the US.

The Windows Marketplace will launch with applications including Facebook and MySpace and a raft of popular game titles.

It also offers a no-questions-asked return policy on the applications it sells. While the number of applications at the time of launch is just 60 in the UK (and about 250 worldwide), Mr Reeve said that there is a large backlog of applications that will soon be approved and become available.

He added that Microsoft's heritage will drive further development of applications for Windows phones.

"One of the great things for Microsoft is that the developer market is in our DNA; we've got a huge background working with developers, so when it comes to building applications for mobile we've got a great opportunity."

You need to verify if your site is not already there within DMoz. If it is there, you needn’t resubmit it.

3. Category Selection

Finding the right category for inclusion of your site is a tedious process. Virtually every category within DMoz has subcategories. You have to drill down to the most appropriate category that describes your site before submitting.

4. The Site Language

If you have a site written in any language other than English, then don’t submit it to the general categories. The appropriate category to submit the site is World, and then navigate to the appropriate internal category.

5. Don’t Submit New Sites

If your site has little or no content, there is no use submitting to DMoz; it will not be accepted. Prepare quite a bit of valuable content on your site—valuable to your readers (remember, it is a human that evaluates your site not a bot). Once you have a site well-designed, and rich in content, it may be a good candidate for inclusion. Sites with ‘under construction’ banner are going to be rejected as soon as submission.

6. Multiple Submissions? No, No!

You are entitled to submit a site only once. Don’t resubmit a site every week. It will negatively affect the site, as it may cause it be removed.

In case you need a change of topic or category, instead of resubmitting the entire site, give a submission update request, by clicking 'update URL' link.

7. Don’t Submit Internal Pages

Only submit the home page URL (http://www.website.com) of the site, and no internal pages (not http://www.website.com/index.html). If you continue to submit internal pages of the site, it will cause even the home page be removed from the directory.

8. Do Not Submit Spam Sites

DMoz doesn’t accept sites with any illegal content, copied content, search-engine-spamming content (with excessive keywords), illicit drugs, libel sites, etc.

9. Site Preparation

When you are about to submit your site to DMoz, it is best to doublecheck and prepare your site enough for inclusion. Check for broken links, links to any bad neighborhoods, excessive keywords, excessive advertisements (as far as blocking the primary content), etc.

While some advertisements can be OK, sites that look like made for money are easily rejected by editors.

10. Keep Good Relationship With DMoz Editors

If you know any DMoz editors, Splendid! You can enquire with an editor courteously as to the status of inclusion of your site. Follow up professionally to enquire the status. If the site gets deleted, the editor will be able to guide you how to reinclude the site. Keep short descriptions and most targeted keywords ready in order to get accepted fast.

Never underestimate the importance of DMoz. Having a link there almost equals the effect of having tens of thousands of high PR targeted links. Also, without giving great care, you cannot get included within the DMoz.

Using the Competitive Ad Filter

In 5 easy steps below, we'll show you how to set up your competitive ad filter from within your AdSense account.

To edit your competitive ad filter, log in to your AdSense account at https://www.google.com/adsense.
Click the AdSense Setup tab. A row of links will appear beneath the tabs - click Competitive Ad Filter. This page will display the URLs currently being filtered for your account. If this is the first time you've used your filter, the text box will be empty.
Choose the appropriate product sub-tab and click Add / Edit Sites.
Copy the URL from the ad into your filter list. There are a couple of ways to find this URL - both methods are described in detail below.
Click Save Changes to add these sites to your competitive ad filter. It usually takes about 4 hours for your changes to take effect, so you'll continue to see ads for these sites on your pages for a little while. If filtered ads are still appearing after 48 hours, please contact us.

Finding the Ad URL

To block an ad, you'll need to enter either the display URL or the destination URL into your filter. The display URL is the URL shown within the text of the ad. Not every ad features a display URL; depending on the ad format you're using, you may need to rely on the destination URL of the ad in order to properly filter it.

There are two methods of obtaining the destination URL of an ad: the AdSense Preview Tool, and viewing the link Properties. We suggest using the preview tool, due to its ease of use and additional functionality.

AdSense Preview Tool

The AdSense Preview Tool is an addition to the right-click menu of Internet Explorer 6.x browsers. It offers the ability to view the ads that would appear on your page, and to display the destination URLs of these ads with only a few clicks.

To find the destination URLs:

Browse to the page containing the ads you'd like to filter.

How do I create an AdSense unit?

To create a new AdSense unit that you can manage within your account, follow the steps below. (The first few will seem pretty familiar to those of you who have generated code before.)

1. Sign in to your account at http://www.google.com/adsense.
2. Under the AdSense Setup tab, choose the Get Ads link.
3. Select AdSense for content as the product. The new AdSense units are only available for AdSense for content at this time.
4. Choose your ad type, format, colors, and channels just as you have in the past.
5. Give your AdSense unit a name that you can remember. We recommend including the site(s), page(s), or location(s) that the AdSense unit will be placed on, so you can easily identify it in the future should you wish to make updates.
6. Click Submit and Get Code.
7. Copy and paste the newly generated code onto your site.

How do I manage my existing AdSense units?

To manage an AdSense unit you've already created, simply take the following steps:

1. Sign in to your account at http://www.google.com/adsense.
2. Under the AdSense Setup tab, visit the Manage Ads page.
3. On this page, you'll see a list of active AdSense units -- units that have been created or received impressions in the last 7 days. (You can view a full list by selecting the checkbox next to 'Show inactive AdSense units'.) Select the AdSense unit you want to update.
