DisplaySearch global TV shipments up in Q3
The nationwide switch from analog to digital broadcasts will be here before you know it. While the switch won’t affect most TV watchers in the U.S., there are some who are still not ready. As a result of old analog TVs not functioning after the switch, many have been upgrading to digital flat panel TVs. This has been one of the major factors pushing growth in the TV market.
DisplaySearch has released its quarterly reports on the number of TVs shipped worldwide for Q3 2008. Despite the poor economy, TV shipments grew by 11% quarter-over-quarter and 6% year-over-year. Over 53 million TVs were shipped worldwide in the quarter. Shipments in North America grew more than expected with a 12% increase compared to last quarter to 10 million units.

Samsung P520 Armani Phone
There are two types of phone users: those that buy phones based on pure aesthetics alone and those that buy based on features and benefits. The Samsung-Armani Phone is an affordable piece of elegant technology that was recently launched in Asia. The phone retails for PHP 26,000.00 or roughly US$600 to $700 (the dollar has recently weakened against Peso currency. The “old” price would have been $500.00). Still not bad for a luxury / fashion phone. The Armani P520 is a credit card sized touch screen phone that hails of iPhone inspiration. It is one of Samsung’s few touchscreen phones that actually, as a technophile - would buy if it had 802.11g wireless Internet capabilities. But it doesn’t Nonetheless, the phone is still pretty decent offering more fashion for less the price.

Samsung OMNIA Impressions
The Samsung OMNIA is Samsung’s latest Windows Mobile lifestyle phone. It runs beneath a combination of Windows Mobile 6.1 and its own proprietary user interface. Samsung’s own UI is divided into a (1) main menu and apps list and (2) the famous drag + drop widgets layout we’ve seen in the SGH F480.
The OMNIA also includes the touch sensitive trackpad mouse navigation seen in its “SamsungBerry” counterparts allowing mouse functions to roll into the UI. This function can be turned off anytime, thus converting the trackpad into a 5 way directional pad. The OMNIA comes with a built in accelerometer allowing for tilting between portrait and landscape modes for left and right handed people. It doesn’t tilt upside down. Samsung’s proprietary UI also adjusts to the tilts in a rather seamless fashion. Other Windows Mobile devices (like those from HTC) tilt with a certain lag. I think Samsung added the special effects to hide the delay. Absolutely brilliant!
The 5MP camera doesn’t have too many bragging rights. Blame it on Windows Mobile camera phones being so sub par. What may be considered as innovative is Samsung’s proprietary software for video editing and panorama mode which allows you to create panorama shots around you. A heed - since the camera isn’t very good, it would be best to practice this under daylight. The OMNIA’s flash isn’t impressive, as it really saturates. Not Samsung’s fault, I’d think. Again, a Windows Mobile issue.

Samsung innov8 i8510 has 8MP and many more!
The Samsung innov8 is Samsung’s latest multimedia phone that boasts an 8MP camera and pretty much all the other bells and whistles you can find in today’s multimedia phone. What sets it apart is .. well … a Samsung real estate finish so you really have to expect nothing less than elegance.
The Samsung innov8 is basically a trump card to Nokia’s N82 as it has all the features (except Xenon flash) and a huge memory boost. And yeah, this is probably built on Nokia’s S60 platform as well.
Some specs:
Huge screen
8MP camera
Music playback
3.5mm audio jack
FM radio
Bluetooth
WiFi
16GB internal memory + expansion capabilities
But wait, there’s more! Press Release says:
Samsung innov8 is also ideal for enthusiastic gamers. It comes pre-embedded with two of the world’s most famous games, Asphalt and FIFA 08. The handset has been chosen as the official phone for the World Cyber Games 2008, which begins on 25th July.
Interesting on many levels. Asphalt and FIFA 2008 are N-Gage titles and we know so well that Samsung licenses the S60 platform from Nokia. As to the extent of the “Samsung OS hack” we need to see a live unit to figure this out. All I’m saying is that if the N-Gage platform can extend to all S60 powered phones regardless of brand, then that would be really cool. It would also imply that the other features such as Share on Ovi can, in the future, be integrated with these third party manufacturers that have S60 built in as the operating system.
