Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks: Architectures and Protocols

Heterogeneous wireless networking, which is sometimes referred to as the fourth-generation (4G) wireless, is a new frontier in the future wireless communications technology and there has been a growing interest on this topic among researchers and engineers in both academia and industry. This book will include a set of research and survey articles featuring the recent advances in theory and applications of heterogeneous wireless networking technology for the next generation (e.g., fourth generation) wireless communications systems. With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, services and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third generation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-service (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. Fourth generation (4G) wireless systems are devised with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks (e.g., WLAN, cellular, WMAN) simultaneously. This book intends to provide a unified view on the state-of-the-art of protocols and architectures for heterogeneous wireless networking. The contributed articles will cover both the theoretical concepts and system-level implementation issues related to design, analysis, and optimization of architectures and protocols for heterogeneous wireless access networks.

Marantz IS301 wireless iPod dock

Wireless iPod docks are not new, but the trend kind of died out leaving us with many tethered versions. Marantz has one of their own to offer with the IS301, a Lucullan wireless iPod dock that transmits both audio and video and includes a receiver with ports for your home theater. Almost every dock-connecting iPod will work and it also features Bluetooth 2.1 for BT-enabled devices. It should hit Japan in January for about $277. Hopefully the US soon after.

Some doorbells can be downright jarring when a visitor presses the button. Just plain loud and offensive. It can really suck if you’re having a quiet night and you’ve had way to much caffeine. Wi-fi buses drive rural web use

The vehicles can effectively send and receive emails from villagers
Buses equipped with wi-fi are being used to deliver web content to remote rural villages in the developing world.

In rural India and parts of Rwanda, Cambodia and Paraguay, the vehicles offer web content to computers with no internet connection.

The buses and a fleet of motorcycles update their pages in cities before visiting the hard-to-reach communities.

As well as offering popular pages, the United Villages project also allows users to request specific information.

Nikon multimedia Wi-Fi Headset with 8GB & a browser

Here’s an odd one from Nikon, but it’s no camera. The Media Port UP300 and UP300x video headset aims to be a wearable computer. The device basically looks like a pair of headphones with a small display, but has some nice specs. It features up to 8GB of flash memory for videos, music and file storage, Wi-Fi, and even, get this, a full internet browser.

The 300x model, even sports motion control. Browsing may be a challenge, who knows. You can also use the Wi-Fi connection to download audio and video content directly. The 300x will cost you $587. Looks like we are now on our way to becoming the Borg. If the next one requires that you dock yourself in a borg ship, I’m heading for the hills.

Design house David Weiner Ventures has unveiled a wireless music broadcasting device which is iPod friendly. It is called the Art.Suono Wireless Music Transmission System and iPod Dock and it will be available for around $1,500.

The Art.Suono Wireless Music Transmission System and iPod Dock is said to combine good looks with wireless audio technology. This technology, which is proprietary, is designed to let you transmit any audio source to any audio system. It is said as well to help enhance sound quality as you listen.
